Four hospitalized after unrelated shootings

Two unrelated shootings in the Northeast last weekend left four people hospitalized, including one alleged gunman who was wounded by a police officer.

The police shooting occurred on Sunday at about 3:19 a.m. A 15th district officer went to the 2000 block of Margaret St. in Frankford in response to a report of gunfire and spotted a man fitting the description of the alleged gunman on the 4600 block of Paul St. The officer exited his patrol car and ordered the suspect to raise his hands, but the man ran toward the 4600 block of Frankford Ave., police said.

During a lengthy foot pursuit, the suspect allegedly pulled a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at the officer three times, with the officer firing his own gun at the suspect each time.

The chase eventually led to an empty lot, where the suspect dropped his gun, ran to an unspecified block of Salem Street and ultimately stopped in a nearby alley, police said. As the officer attempted to handcuff the suspected gunman, he allegedly grabbed for the officer’s gun, prompting the officer to shoot him in the back, police said. Authorities have not released the identity of the alleged gunman, who was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition. Police recovered the discarded revolver in the empty lot.

In the shooting that precipitated the foot pursuit, the suspect allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, age 20, and her brother, 21. Both victims were also taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition, police said. Criminal charges are pending. An unrelated shooting occurred on Saturday at about 10:10 p.m. on the 6100 block of Lovatt Terrace in Lawndale. Police arrived at the scene to find a 22-year-old man in the street with wounds of the neck and groin. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. Police have not disclosed a suspect or motive in the case. ••
